Objectives of the Upward Bound Program at University of Florida
Our History
Upward Bound, the oldest of a series of programs known as TRIO Programs, was created as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty”. Specific legislation for the program was initially authorized under the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and later moved to be included under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. This legislation which authorized the TRIO programs sought to provide educational opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance.
Upward Bound is a college preparatory program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, that helps high school students to develop the skills and motivation necessary to succeed in high school and ultimately in college and professional careers. Upward Bound programs serve all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Palau, Micronesia, and American Samoa. Participants must have completed the 8th grade but not yet have advanced to 12th grade and must meet federal income eligibility requirements and/or be potential first generation college students.
University of Florida UPWARD BOUND Program
The Upward Bound Program at the University of Florida began during the summer of 1971 with 64 students. Since then, the Program has helped hundreds of students to complete high school and enter college. The University of Florida Upward Bound Program is currently funded to serve 80 students attending high school in Alachua and Bradford counties.
Upward Bound at the University of Florida is a year-round program consisting of an intensive six week residential Summer Session and the Fall-Spring Academic Year. During the Summer Session, students live in a residence hall on the University of Florida campus, enroll in college preparatory classes including hands-on science laboratories, and participate in educational, cultural, and other youth development activities. The Academic Year Curriculum consists of tutorials, workshops, counseling, and other support services. Upward Bound particpants attend 24 Saturday sessions during which they engage in activities to enhance and complement their schoolwork. Upward Bound counselors work with each student to develop and implement an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) according to the student’s needs, potential, interests, and goals. Workshops and counseling on decision making, study skills, career planning, choosing a college major, financial aid and life skills are provided. Mentoring and tutoring are also offered.
Cultural and Life Expanding Activities
Upward Bound believes that a successful person is well-rounded. In addition to the academic programming, students attend local and state-wide conferences, participate in the Annual Summer Olympics, enjoy cultural and educational events and trips, organize a talent pageant, conduct student leadership activities and participate in community service projects. These and other activities allow students a comprehensive college preparatory environment.
The Summer Bridge Program
During the summer after high school graduation, UPWARD BOUND students may participate in the Summer Bridge Program. UF Upward Bound participants who are admitted to the University of Florida are helped to bridge the path between high school and college. The program pays for tuition and books for students to enroll in regular UF courses and earn up to six hours of college credit toward the B.A. or B.S. degree.
